Furnace Keeps Turning On and Off? Here's What's Going On and How to Fix It
Your furnace fires up, runs for a minute or two, then quits. A few minutes later it does the whole thing again. This is called short cycling, and it's one of the most common heating calls we get once the cold rolls into Sussex, Morris, and Passaic counties.
Short cycling is annoying. It also runs up your gas bill and wears out furnace parts faster than they should. Sometimes the fix takes thirty seconds. Sometimes it points to a safety problem you don't want to ignore.

Here's how to figure out which kind of problem you've got.
First, what counts as "short cycling"?
A healthy furnace runs in cycles of roughly 10 to 15 minutes, then rests until your home cools a degree or two. That's normal.
Short cycling is different. The furnace shuts off after just a minute or three, before your house ever warms up, and it happens over and over. If you're watching the burner kick on and off every couple of minutes, that's the pattern we're talking about.
The causes, from most likely to most serious
We put these in order on purpose. Start at the top. Nine times out of ten around here, the culprit is near the top of the list, not the bottom.
1. A clogged air filter (start here, always)
This is the number one cause, and it's the one you can fix yourself in five minutes.
When the filter is packed with dust, air can't move through the furnace. Heat builds up inside. A safety part called the high-limit switch senses the furnace getting too hot and shuts it down to protect it. Once it cools, it fires back up, overheats again, and shuts down again. That's your short cycle.
What to do: Pull the filter and hold it up to a light. If you can't see light through it, replace it. In an older Lake Hopatcong home with pets, plan on a fresh filter every month. In a newer, tighter house, every 2 to 3 months is usually fine.
If a new filter fixes it, great. You just saved yourself a service call.
2. Thermostat trouble
Your thermostat is the brain. If it's confused, the whole system acts up.
Three things go wrong most often. The batteries are dying and sending weak signals. The thermostat is mounted somewhere it gets false readings, like next to a supply vent, a sunny window, or a drafty exterior wall, so it thinks the room hit temperature before it actually did. Or the wiring behind it has worked loose.
What to do: Swap the batteries first. Then look at where the thermostat lives. If it's in a spot that gets blasted with warm or cold air, that placement alone can cause short cycling, and moving it is a real repair, not a DIY afternoon. Loose or corroded wiring is a job for a technician, since you're working around live low-voltage connections.
3. A dirty flame sensor
Gas furnaces use a small metal rod called a flame sensor to confirm the burner actually lit. When that rod gets coated in soot and grime, it stops "seeing" the flame. The furnace assumes something's wrong and shuts the gas off as a safety move, then tries again a moment later.
The tell here is a specific rhythm: burner lights, runs for a few seconds, then cuts out, again and again.
What to do: This one sits right on the line. Some handy homeowners clean the flame sensor themselves. We'd rather you not guess around the burner assembly and gas valve. A cleaning is a quick, low-cost visit for us, and we'll check the rest of the ignition system while we're in there.
4. Blocked airflow past the filter
A clean filter is step one, but it isn't the only thing that starves your furnace of air. Closed or blocked supply vents, furniture sitting on a return grille, or a duct system full of debris all create the same overheating problem as a dirty filter.
What to do: Walk the house and open your vents. Yes, all of them. Closing vents in unused rooms to "save money" actually chokes the system and can trigger short cycling. If your vents are open and the furnace still overheats, the ducts themselves may need attention. That's where our indoor air quality and duct services come in.
5. A clogged condensate line (high-efficiency furnaces)
If your furnace was installed in the last decade or so, it's probably a high-efficiency model that drains water as it runs. That water goes out through a condensate line. When the line clogs, a safety float switch trips and shuts the furnace down to prevent a leak. Cleared, then clogged again, and you're short cycling.
What to do: Check for standing water near the base of the furnace. A clogged drain line is a routine fix for a technician and worth handling before it backs up onto your floor.
6. A furnace that's simply too big
Here's one people never suspect: the furnace was oversized for the house from day one.
An oversized furnace heats the air near the thermostat so fast that it satisfies the temperature and shuts off long before the rest of the house is comfortable. Then the house cools, it roars back on, and the cycle repeats all winter. This shows up a lot in homes where an old oil furnace got swapped for gas without resizing the equipment to match the house.
What to do: There's no filter or gadget that fixes a sizing mistake. If your furnace has short cycled since the day it was installed, ask us to do a proper load calculation. When it's time to replace, our furnace installation team sizes the unit to your actual home, not a rule of thumb.
7. A cracked heat exchanger (stop and call)
This is last because it's the least common, and it's the one you never DIY.
The heat exchanger is the metal barrier that keeps combustion gases, including carbon monoxide, separated from the air you breathe. A crack can cause the furnace to shut down on a safety sensor and short cycle. More importantly, it can leak carbon monoxide into your home.
What to do: If you smell anything odd, feel unwell when the heat runs, or your carbon monoxide alarm goes off, leave the house and call us. Do not keep running the furnace. The honest DIY line
Two of these you can genuinely handle on your own: change the filter, swap the thermostat batteries. Do those before you call anyone.
Everything else involves gas, combustion, live wiring, or safety sensors. We're not saying that to sell you a visit. We're saying it because a short cycle caused by a cracked heat exchanger and a short cycle caused by a dusty flame sensor look identical from your living room, and only one of them is dangerous.

Left alone, a short cycling furnace costs you three ways. It burns extra gas every time it restarts, so your bill climbs. It wears out the igniter, blower, and other parts faster, which turns a small repair into a big one. And it never actually keeps your house comfortable, so you're paying more to feel colder.
