When Heat Eludes You: What We Track Down
When your heating goes rogue in the dead of winter, panic can set in. Here's what we chase and tame:
-
Icy Silence from the Vents: Furnace on, house still an icebox? We scrutinize thermostats, blocked filters, or stubborn ignitions.
-
Short-Circuiting Warmth: If your furnace won’t stay on long enough to matter, it might be battling a filthy filter, a moody flame sensor, or congested ventwork.
-
Haunted Furnace Sounds: Banging, whining, shrieking? That symphony of doom could mean a loose cog, faltering motor, or a burner begging for attention.
Is Your AC Crying for Help?
In a Sparta summer, your AC must perform like a symphony, not a kazoo. Watch for these distress flares:
-
Hot Air Instead of Cool Bliss: Often tied to dwindling refrigerant, an exhausted compressor, or a coil clogged to oblivion.
-
Puddles Where There Should Be None: May signal a blocked drain or a frozen evaporator — either way, it’s a cry for help.
-
Ominous Odours or Noisy Whirs: Electrical trouble, microbial build-up, or malfunctioning components could be the culprits.

Received a call that the heat was not working however the fan is running continuous. Upon arrival I found that it is a heat pump system with electric heat, I did confirm that the heat pump was not running and the electric heaters were not being energized however the blower was running continuous. Upon troubleshooting I found that the thermostat is not a heat pump thermostat, the system was wired for a conventional heating setup however the low voltage wiring for the electric heater strips were not connected. The homeowner for me that they had the thermostat replaced over the summer, it was a customer supplied nest thermostat that they had received from the utility company.
